Description |
Reporting to: Archive & Manuscripts Manager
Description We are seeking a qualified professional archivist to assist in the management and development of the archive and manuscripts collection in the Archive and Library of the National Maritime Museum. The Archive and Library holds over 2 million archives, charts, maps, manuscripts and a library collection of 100,000 rare books and research volumes, illustrating the history of exploration, empire, navigation and maritime endeavour.
Reporting to the Archive and Manuscripts Manager, the post holder will contribute significantly to the enhanced cataloguing of the archive collections and assist in providing public access to the Archive and Library collections.
The successful candidate will also contribute to the Museum’s planned multi-million pound project which will enhance access to archive and paper-based collections at Greenwich. The Museum intends to broaden access to our archive and library collections and develop services that engage new audiences by improving and extending our offerings via the web as well as on site. This period will involve two major moves of the collections and will require the post holder to have an active, hands-on role.
Key Responsibilities: •Assist in the management, care and development of the archive and manuscripts collections •Contribute to an enhanced archival cataloguing programme according to ISAD(G) and all other relevant standards and practices •Contribute to the maintenance and development of the archival element of Mimsy XG database, including revisions of cataloguing guidelines •Provide public access to the collections including front-line services, enquiry work and administration •Assist with managing the reprographic service •Provide an efficient retrieval service from both on-site locations and outstations •Assist in the supervision of volunteers or work experience candidates •With the Archive & Manuscripts Manager, work closely with the Learning and Interpretation department and Digital Media department to develop high-quality programmes using archives for the new Research Centre •Assist in the planning and preparation of new services in the Museum’s planned £30 million development to enhance access to the Archive and Library’s collections •Take an active part in appropriate internal and external networks to further the development and activities of the archive and library
Qualifications and Experience •Professional qualification in archives administration or equivalent (with proven relevant experience since qualification); educated to degree level or equivalent •Experience in a public research and learning archive and library or similar working environment •Experience of working with archives and manuscripts collections •A working knowledge of archive databases and of general ICT packages •Demonstrable experience of implementing and operating within national and international archival standards and guidelines e.g. ISAD(G) •Excellent interpersonal skills and team-player skills •Strong communication skills, with the confidence to deal with members of the public, academics and groups of learners •A strong commitment to customer care and high standards of service provision •Willingness to work across the Museum’s departments and contribute to Museum-wide issues •Energetic with the ability to lift and carry the weight of about 12 average sized books
Terms and Conditions
The post holder will work a 41 hour week, core hours Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm with an additional hour to be worked in agreement with line management, and Saturday reading room duty on a scheduled basis with time off in lieu.
Salary: £21,000 - £26,000
